How social investment could help resource government’s VAWG strategy

How do we fund tackling violence against women and girls?

Government has set an ambition - re-stated in its latest strategy, Freedom from Violence and Abuse - to halve violence against women and girls. Yet its been made clear any new money will be limited.

We want to find a way forward - to have a system resourced with funding that’s suitable, sufficient and sustainable.

In this short paper, RIVA explores how social investment can be part of the answer. This includes enabling the transition to earlier and preventative action, and expanding accommodation for women and children escaping abuse.

We draw on insights from RIVA’s own Lisa Hilder, and her pioneering work over 18 years expanding accommodation for women and children, as well as conversations with leading social investors and commissioners. The paper suggests concrete actions government can take to increase the flow of social investment to frontline specialist services delivering the ambition to reduce violence against women and girls.
